From the first time you visit our midwives, you will notice a difference. We are here to help you create a powerful new moment.
This is your moment, your miracle, we are here to inform and guide. You are our FAMILY, not our patient. We know that Birth is not an illness and this allows us to focus on your pregnancy and birth. Pregnancy, birth, and child rearing are natural events in a woman's life.
We want you to feel supported and satisfied, through every step of this new event.
If you are ready to have your voice heard, to be more than a number on a medical chart,
and to have someone support you in this amazing miracle, call, email, or text us today!
Your initial prenatal appointment generally lasts 60 minutes as we spend much of the time getting to know one another and your individual history, goals and desires for this pregnancy. Beautiful Mountain Birth fully embraces the Midwives' Model of Care and strives to excel in providing a shared decision-making experience with true informed consent for each and every client. Time is taken at each appointment to ensure that you are fully informed about your choices. You, as the client, will have access to "scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and your own personal preferences and values" in working together with the midwife to determine your personal plan of care. Parenting begins at the time of conception and we support you as you consciously make the choices and decisions necessary while you walk the path of YOUR pregnancy.
Your prenatal care with Beautiful Mountain Birth midwives will include regular appointments (monthly until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until your birth). We are also able to perform lab work and order ultrasounds. We work closely with you throughout your pregnancy to help ensure that you and your baby stay healthy. Good nutrition, adequate hydration, regular exercise, and other preventative measures are keys to maintaining good health.
At each visit, we will monitor your blood pressure and other vitals, perform routine urinalysis, measure your uterus to make sure your baby is growing well, determine your baby’s position by feeling your belly or by ultrasound, and listen to the baby’s heart beat. We encourage you to bring your family to your prenatal visits. You and your family will have plenty of time to talk and to ask all your questions and discuss any concerns with your Midwife. We recommend a holistic, natural approach to health care and to lifestyle management, as much as possible, but will advise you on other appropriate options as well.
During the course of your pregnancy, we will watch very carefully to make sure everything is going well. If an issue arises that is outside of normal, you may be referred to appropriate healthcare providers for consultation or care. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the highest quality maternity care. Your Midwife will always be available to you by phone if you have any urgent concerns.
We offer all the standard testing in pregnancy including early pregnancy hormone testing when indicated, genetic screening, prenatal labs, pap smear and cultures, ultrasounds, glucose screening and GBS testing. Your health care is your responsibility; so, after understanding the purpose of each test, YOU decide which tests you wish to have.
When you are in active labor, you will come to the birth suite or we will come to your home, depending on the situation, to assess your progress and monitor you and your baby’s well being. When indicated, another midwife (and other key birth team members) will come to assist with the birth. Water labor and birth is available and courtesy tub kits are offered (you pay us only for the disposable liner).
Soon after the birth, once the placenta has delivered and mom and baby are stable, we will tuck you in to snuggle and encourage your family to have private time for bonding with your new baby. After this special bonding time, we will weigh, measure and do a thorough and gentle newborn exam on your baby (at your side - baby never leaves you!) and assess your vitals and perineal area for any lacerations which may require repair (don't worry, we have anesthetics to numb you!)
Postpartum, mother & baby care instructions are given and generally, within three to four hours everyone is stable, ready for some rest, and it is time for you (birth suite) or the midwives (home birth) to leave.
The first days and weeks are important for successful breastfeeding, bonding, and the physical and emotional transition to parenting. Most providers offer a single, 6 week postpartum appointment, but we offer our families the tremendous benefit from more attentive care and support. We provide home visits, within the first 24 - 48 hours and again at 3 - 5 days postpartum (if needed), where we visit with mom and baby, perform the newborn metabolic, hearing and critical congenital heart defect screenings, assess and assist with breastfeeding, and general well-being. We assist with any concerns, and we care for you according to your specific needs in this first, very special week. Subsequent postpartum visits are provided in our office, for both mother and baby at 2 weeks, 4 weeks (optional) and a final visit at 6 weeks. Mothers who need additional visits or help with their babies need only call!
Throughout the postpartum period, we assess the physical healing and emotional well being of mom, discuss family planning, process and debrief the birth experience, screen for postpartum mood disorders, perform routine newborn weight checks and feeding evaluations, offer breastfeeding support and assistance, give support and guidance to help during the transition stage for your new family, and provide community resources for additional care as needed.
The 6 week, final appointment is always SO bittersweet. Hearts hurt with the realization of the conclusion of your care and the ending of our time together, but we love the beauty of each and every new family we have been privileged to walk with on their journey. And of course, we are always excited to see you again... next time !
